Tours Overview

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest and most recent route, known for excellent acclimatization which greatly increases summit success rates. It provides breathtaking and diverse scenery, maintains a leisurely pace, and keeps you away from the crowds, even during busy times.

Starting on the western side of Kilimanjaro, the Northern Circuit initially shares its path with the Lemosho route, leading through lush rainforests into the moorland zone. From Shira Ridge, you traverse the expansive Shira Plateau, then proceed eastward towards Moir Camp, located behind a ridge near Lava Tower.
Here, you diverge from the southern routes, circling around to the quieter northern slopes of the mountain. After a few days, you’ll meet up with trekkers from the Rongai route at Third Cave campsite.
The trek then leads to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit push. At midnight, you begin your ascent to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro’s highest point. After reaching the summit, you’ll spend two days descending via the Mweka route on the southeast side of the mountain.
Post.

Itinerary

Day one of your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure begins with an exhilarating journey from the moment you touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Upon arrival, you'll be warmly greeted by our representative who will escort you to your comfortable hotel in Moshi (Chanya Lodge), where you can rest and prepare for the adventure ahead. After settling in, you'll head to our office for a crucial pre-trek briefing. Here, you'll meet your mountain guide and a dedicated consultant who will walk you through the itinerary, ensuring you understand the trek's challenges and highlights. They will meticulously check your gear, confirming that you have everything required for the ascent, from proper clothing to trekking poles. This briefing is not just about logistics; it's also an opportunity to ask questions, discuss any concerns, and get acclimated to the idea of climbing Africa's highest peak. With all preparations in order, your Kilimanjaro adventure officially kicks off with this foundational day, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel around 8:00 AM, followed by a scenic drive to the Lemosho Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Upon arrival at the gate, which is at an elevation of 2,100 meters, you'll go through the necessary registration process, meet your trekking crew, and prepare for the climb. The trek starts gently through the lush, biodiverse forests of the Lemosho Glades, offering a peaceful introduction to your journey. You might encounter wildlife, including monkeys and various bird species, while walking under the canopy of ancient trees, like the African yellowwood. After roughly 4 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Big Tree Camp, nestled at 2,780 meters, where your crew will set up camp amidst towering trees. Here, you'll enjoy a nutritious lunch and dinner, crucial for your energy levels. The day concludes with some rest, perhaps listening to the forest's nocturnal sounds, as you prepare for further acclimatization and the next day's trek.

Hiking Time:7 hours
Total Distance:12 km
Starting Altitude:2780m (9222ft)
Final Altitude:3511m (11520ft)
Environment: Montane Forest – Moorland
Today is a long day over narrow tracks that weave in and out of the ridges as we ascend.
Along the way we will admire trees such as the giant heather and erica and as we gain altitude we will encounter the unique giant levelia and giant groundsel (senecio kilimanjari). There is no hurry to reach Shira Camp and our mantra “pole pole” (Swakili: “slowly slowly”) resonates in our ears ensuring our bodies adjust to the altitude gain and to take in the magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. The Shira Plateau is one of the highest in the world with an average height of 3810m and extends for about 13 kms to the west of Kilimanjaro. The Shira Plateau is a caldera, a collapsed volcanic crater. We might even spot a herd of eland in the distance, or startle a grey duiker near camp.
Elevation: 3,505 m to 3,810 m

Distance: 7 km / 4 miles

Hiking time: 4-6 hours

Habitat: Afro-alpine moorland

Today, you'll set out from Shira 1 Camp for a trek across the expansive Shira Plateau towards Shira 2 Camp. This leg of the journey typically takes between four to six hours, offering a relatively gentle hike compared to other days.
The Shira Plateau, a high-altitude plain formed by a volcanic caldera, provides a unique landscape where the terrain is more level, but the altitude still presents its challenges. Here, you'll walk through an environment of rocky outcrops, sparse grasslands, and possibly encounter some unique alpine flora like giant groundsels and lobelias.
As you progress, you'll notice a significant shift in temperature. The higher elevation of Shira 2 Camp, which sits at around 3,850 meters, means the weather can be quite variable. Days might be warm with the sun beating down, but as soon as the sun sets, the temperature can drop dramatically, often dipping below freezing. This temperature swing requires you to be well-prepared with layers of clothing to manage both the warmth of the day and the cold of the night.
The trek to Shira 2 involves some minor ascents and descents as you navigate across this ancient plateau, but it's generally considered a day for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude. You'll have time to enjoy the vast, open views and perhaps see the distant peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi if the weather is clear.
Upon reaching Shira 2 Camp, you'll set up for the night. Here, the camp is often quieter than others due to the route's design, giving you a sense of solitude amidst the vastness of Kilimanjaro. After dinner, your guides might share more about the trek ahead or point out constellations in the clear, high-altitude sky. With the chill setting in, it's wise to retire early to your tent, ensuring you're rested for the challenges of the days to come.
Elevation: 3,810 m to 4,206 m

Distance: 14 km / 8 miles

Hiking time: 2-3 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

On this day you can expect a trek of two to three hours through the high alpine desert. You climb to Lava Tower and the Shark's Tooth rock formation. You then head back down to Moir Camp. This is an important acclimatization day.

Elevation: 4,206 m to 4,033 m

Distance: 12 km / 7 miles

Hiking time: 5-6 hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

From Moir Hut, you'll navigate around Kibo, getting a firsthand look at the mountain's more desolate, northern side. The path leads you to Pofu Camp, where you'll set up for the night. At an altitude of 4,033 meters, tonight's campsite is actually lower than the previous night's at Moir Hut, which is beneficial for acclimatization. Sleeping at a slightly lower elevation after days of climbing can help your body adjust better to the high altitude, potentially reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
This day's hike not only offers a physical respite with the descent but also a visual treat with the changing landscapes. As you settle into Pofu Camp, you might enjoy the expansive views of the surrounding valleys and peaks, all under the vast Kilimanjaro sky. Remember to hydrate well, as the dry, high-altitude environment can dehydrate you more quickly. After dinner, the lower altitude might provide a more restful night's sleep, preparing you for the next day's challenges.
Elevation: 4,033 m to 3,870 m

Habitat: Semi-desert

Hiking time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Arctic

Much like the past couple of days, the journey today is lengthy but can be very rewarding. Buffaloes are sometimes spotted here. You cross valleys on this trek of four to five hours and end at Third Cave, where you stay the night. Once again, you sleep a little lower than the previous night, which is great for your acclimatisation.

Elevation: 3,870 m to 4,750 m

Distance: 5 km / 3 miles

Hiking time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Arctic

Today you undertake a steady climb over the Saddle, a stretch of barren land connecting the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The terrain is pretty inhospitable, being a high-altitude desert. You climb for four to five hours to arrive at School Hut, where you get some rest before the big day!

Final Altitude:3819m (12530ft)
Environment: Stone Scree, ice-capped summit, Alpine desert

We will rise early to leave camp at around 12am and after a warm drink and a light snack, you will begin the most difficult though most rewarding day of the trek – your hike to the roof of Africa.

After approximately 6 hours of slow but strenuous hiking, you will reach the rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5685m. At this point we stop to rest, eat lunch and take in the views over the clouds. From Stella Point the trail is normally snow-covered, and every step of the two-hour final ascent to Uhuru peak is challenging.

Passing alongside the iridescent blue Rebmann and Tarzel glaciers we reach Elveda Point (5882) we can see Uhuru Peak now only minutes away. The roof of Africa is within your grasp.
Arriving at the summit you feel a huge sense of elation and accomplishment you have done it, you have made it to the highest point in Africa. We spend as much time as you need to appreciate your accomplishment, as this is a day to remember for the rest of your life! The time you will spend on the summit will depend on the weather conditions and temperature.
We start back down the same trail and descend to Barafu camp. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and remove some of your many layers of clothing as the day begins to heat up. We head down the rock and scree path into the moorland zone, reaching the forest, and eventually arriving at Mweka Camp in the early afternoon where a hot shower and meal await. Today is the longest, and the most mentally and physically challenging of the trek. But a life-changing day that will stay with you forever, as you conquer the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Hiking Time:5-6 hours
Total Distance:13.5 km
Starting Altitude: 3819m (15530ft)
Final Altitude:1652m (5420ft)
Environment: Montane (rain) Forest

Today your legs will be further tested as the trail descends steeply through the lush Mweka rain forest.
The trail is steep in places and the going slippery if wet. The route follows the crest of a broad ridge separating two river valleys until it meets with a road that leads us for the last 40 mins to the Mweka Park Gates where we stop for a well deserved picnic lunch where successful hikers will receive their summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peale, Green for Stella point) from the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority. Post celebrations, we are taken by either private bus or Jeep to your hotel in Arusha.

On this final day of your Kilimanjaro adventure, you have two paths before you:
Depart Tanzania: For those whose journey with Kilimanjaro marks the end of their Tanzanian adventure, we facilitate a smooth transition back to daily life. After a relaxing morning at your hotel, perhaps savoring one last Tanzanian breakfast, you'll be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport or the local bus station, depending on your onward travel plans. This transfer ensures you reach your destination with plenty of time for check-in if flying or to catch your next bus. As you leave, you'll carry with you not just souvenirs but memories of an incredible climb, one that will linger in your mind for years to come.
Continue Your Dream with Amazing Safari Extensions: Alternatively, if your spirit of adventure is still aflame, this is the perfect opportunity to delve into the wonders of Tanzania's wildlife. We offer a variety of safari extensions, where you can explore some of Africa's most renowned national parks like Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire. Imagine swapping the mountain air for the savannah breeze, watching the Big Five in their natural habitat, or witnessing the Great Migration. Our safaris are tailored to provide an intimate experience with nature, all while ensuring comfort and safety. Whether you choose a short game drive or an extended journey through multiple parks, this extension will round off your Tanzanian experience with the vast, wild beauty of Africa.
Regardless of your choice, day seven is about transitioning from one adventure to another or returning home enriched by your experiences. We ensure that your departure or continuation is as seamless and enjoyable as the journey itself.
